Medicare Help in Monett, MO

By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19

Monett sits right about halfway between our Springfield and Joplin offices. It's a town of about 9,600 people per the 2020 Census, in Barry County. And it has its own hospital, which is a big deal for a town this size.

Lots of folks in Monett already have their Medicare set up. A lot of folks I talk to have a Medicare Supplement they bought years ago. And they wonder if they're still getting a fair shake.

So this page covers something most Missourians don't know about. Missouri gives you a yearly chance to shop your Supplement.

Think of it like shopping your car insurance

Here's the mental model.

A lot of folks shop their car insurance every year or two. Same coverage, different company, better price. Nobody asks how your driving's been.

Missouri has a rule that works a lot like that for Medicare Supplements.

Missouri's anniversary rule, in plain English

This comes straight from the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance Medigap shopping guide.

The rule: Each year, you can switch Medicare Supplement companies during the 30 days before or after your policy's anniversary date. That's the date your policy first started.

The key part: If you switch to the same lettered plan with a new company, that company can't deny you. And it can't make you wait for coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

So Plan G at one company to Plan G at another? Protected.

An example from the guide: If your anniversary is June 30, you can switch between June 1 and July 30.

A few fine-print items

  • You need simple proof. A renewal notice, a bill, or your old policy works.
  • Switching to a plan with more benefits is different. That usually means health questions. You could be turned down.
  • Switching to fewer benefits may or may not involve health questions. Not every company allows it.
  • Don't cancel the old policy first. Make sure the new one has started.
  • If someone tells you you don't qualify, the state says to call the Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390.

Don't know your anniversary date? Call your insurance company and ask. Then write it on your fridge.

How this fits with the federal rules

Missouri's rule is extra. It sits on top of the federal one.

Under federal law, you get a one-time 6-month Medigap open enrollment period. It starts the first month you have Part B and you're 65 or older. During that window, you can buy any Supplement sold in your state without health questions.

After that, outside of special situations, companies can usually ask about your health. The Missouri anniversary rule is one of those special situations. That's why it's worth knowing.

Where Monett folks get care

Cox Monett Hospital, 1000 E Highway 60, Monett. It's a critical access hospital. CoxHealth describes a 25-bed facility with an emergency department that's a Level 3 stroke and STEMI center, plus surgery, imaging and a pharmacy. It does not do labor and delivery.

CoxHealth also lists rural clinics tied to Cox Monett, including Aurora, Mt. Vernon, Cassville, Crane and Shell Knob.

For bigger specialty care, Monett folks often head to Springfield or Joplin. Either one is about an hour.

If you have a Supplement, network isn't an issue. You can use any provider in the U.S. that takes Medicare. That's handy when your care is split between two cities.
