Medicare Help in Carthage, MO

By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19

Carthage is the county seat of Jasper County. About 15,500 people live here, per the 2020 Census. You've got a hospital in town and two big hospital systems a short drive away in Joplin.

When Medicare comes up in Carthage, there's one topic that gets people every time. The TV ads.

Dental. Vision. Hearing. Grocery cards. "Extra benefits."

So let's talk about the extras. What Medicare covers, what it doesn't, and how I'd think about it.

Think of the extras like the sides at a diner

Here's the mental model.

You walk into a diner. The sides look great. Fries, slaw, a roll.

But you came for the main dish. If the main dish is bad, the sides don't fix it.

In Medicare, the main dish is your medical coverage. Your doctors. Your hospital. What you'd pay if you got really sick. Your drugs.

The extras are the sides. Nice to have. Worth comparing. But check the main dish first.

What Original Medicare doesn't cover

This surprises a lot of folks. Per Medicare.gov, Original Medicare doesn't cover:

  • Most dental care. Cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures.
  • Routine eye exams for glasses or contacts.
  • Hearing aids and exams for fitting them.
  • Routine physical exams.
  • Non-medical long-term care.

There are a few narrow dental exceptions tied to certain medical treatments. But for everyday dental work, Original Medicare isn't the answer.

What it does cover: a one-time "Welcome to Medicare" preventive visit in your first 12 months of Part B, then a yearly wellness visit. Those are different from a full physical.

Where Medicare Advantage extras come in

Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers. Medicare.gov says most plans also offer extra benefits, like some vision, hearing and dental.

Here's what I'd check on any plan's extras:

  1. Is the dental preventive only, or does it cover bigger work? Cleanings are one thing. Crowns and dentures are another.
  2. Is there a yearly dollar limit? Some extras have one.
  3. Do I have to use certain dentists or eye doctors? Check your current ones.
  4. Does the extra fit my life? A big hearing benefit doesn't help much if your hearing is fine.

And then go back to the main dish. Is Mercy Carthage in the network? Are your Joplin specialists in it? What happens if you have a big medical year?

If you go with Original Medicare and a Supplement, you'd usually handle dental, vision and hearing separately. That's not wrong. It's just a different way to build it.

Where Carthage folks get care

In Carthage:

  • Mercy Hospital Carthage, 3125 Dr. Russell Smith Way. It's a 25-bed hospital, open 24 hours. Folks who've been here a while may still call it McCune-Brooks. It became Mercy Hospital Carthage in 2012.

In Joplin, about 20 to 25 minutes away:

  • Freeman Hospital West, 1102 W 32nd St. Freeman lists it as a 339-bed teaching hospital with a Level II Trauma Center.
  • Mercy Hospital Joplin, 100 Mercy Way. Also a state-designated Level II Trauma Center.

Plenty of folks around here end up using both Freeman and Mercy. If you're looking at an Advantage plan, check both systems against the network.
