Medicare Help in Neosho, MO

By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19

Neosho is the county seat of Newton County. It's a town of about 12,600 per the 2020 Census, with its own hospital and a senior center that's been around since the 1960s.

This page covers the basics for Neosho folks. But I want to spend most of it on something that doesn't get talked about enough.

There are programs that help pay Medicare costs. And in most cases, you have to apply to get them.

Think of it like the senior discount at the counter

Here's the mental model.

A lot of places offer a senior discount. But they usually don't hand it to you. You have to ask.

Medicare help programs work a lot the same way. They exist. They can make a real difference. But usually, you have to ask.

There are two big ones to know.

1. Extra Help with drug costs

Extra Help is a federal program run through Social Security. It helps people with limited income and resources pay for Medicare drug coverage. That includes premiums, deductibles and copays.

A few things to know:

  • You can apply any time. Before or after you join a drug plan.
  • Apply online at ssa.gov, or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.
  • You still need a drug plan. Extra Help works through a Medicare drug plan. Applying doesn't enroll you in one.
  • For 2027, Medicare.gov lists the Extra Help copays. It's up to $5.80 for each covered generic and up to $14.40 for each covered brand-name drug.

Social Security also says some things don't count as resources. Your home, your car and household items are examples. So don't rule yourself out too fast.

2. Missouri's Medicare Savings Programs

These are run by the state, through the Family Support Division. They help pay your Medicare premiums. Some help with deductibles and coinsurance too.

Missouri has three:

  • QMB helps pay Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles and coinsurance.
  • SLMB helps pay your Part B premium.
  • QI-1 helps with Part B premiums too. It has its own rules, so ask.

To qualify, you need to be a Missouri resident with Part A, and meet income and resource limits. As one example, Missouri's QMB limit for one person is $1,330 a month in income, effective April 2026. The resource limit is $9,950 for one person in 2026. Limits change each year, so check the current ones.

How to apply: Online through myDSS at mydss.mo.gov, by mail, or at a local Family Support Division Resource Center. Questions? The Family Support Division's number is 855-373-4636.

Here's a bonus. Per Medicare.gov, if you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, you automatically qualify for Extra Help too.
