Medicare Help in Marshfield, MO
By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19
Marshfield is the county seat of Webster County. It's a little over 7,400 people per the 2020 Census. And almost 1 in 5 residents is 65 or older.
Here's the thing about Marshfield and Medicare. There's no hospital in town. For a hospital stay, you're driving to Springfield or Lebanon.
That changes how I'd think about coverage. So let's talk about two things Marshfield folks should get right: emergency coverage and drug coverage.
Think of it like a spare tire
Here's the mental model.
You don't buy a spare tire because you plan to get a flat. You buy it because you live a ways from the tire shop.
Same with Medicare. You want to know, before anything happens, how your coverage works when care is a drive away. And when you're not near home.
Emergency care: what's covered where
Here's the good news. Emergencies are covered more broadly than most folks think.
- Original Medicare works with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage plans must cover emergency and urgent care, even if the hospital isn't in the plan's network. Medicare.gov is clear on that.
- You don't need a referral for emergency care. If your health is in danger, call 911.
Where networks do matter is the follow-up. The specialist visits. The planned surgery. The physical therapy after. With an Advantage plan, that care usually needs to be in network.
So if you're in Marshfield, ask: which Springfield hospitals and specialists are in this plan? Is Lebanon in it, too?
Where Marshfield folks get care
In Marshfield:
- Mercy Clinic Family Medicine – Marshfield, 1040 W Washington St. Mercy lists weekday walk-in hours.
- CoxHealth Center Marshfield, 1245 Banning St. Primary care with same-day or next-day new patient visits, per CoxHealth.
Hospitals nearby:
- Mercy Hospital Springfield, 1235 E Cherokee St.
- Cox Medical Center South, 3801 S National Ave, Springfield.
- Mercy Hospital Lebanon, 100 Hospital Dr, Lebanon. An option for folks on the east side of the county.
Our office in south Springfield is about 40 minutes from Marshfield.
Drug coverage: don't skip it just because you're healthy
This is the other spare tire. A lot of healthy folks I talk to ask about skipping a drug plan. Here's why I'd think twice.
Say you go 63 days or more in a row without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable coverage, after you're first eligible. You can owe a late enrollment penalty. Medicare.gov explains it this way:
- It's 1% of the national base premium for each full month you went without coverage.
- That base was $38.99 in 2026.
- It's added to your drug plan premium, generally for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
"Creditable" just means coverage at least as good as Medicare's. It might come from a current or former employer, a union, TRICARE, or the VA. Your plan will tell you if it counts.
Also good news for 2027. Medicare drug coverage has a yearly cap on out-of-pocket costs for covered drugs. For 2027, it's $2,400. And no drug plan can have a deductible over $700.
A rural pharmacy note
In a smaller town, your pharmacist is often someone you know by name. Keep it that way. Drug plans have in-network and preferred pharmacies. Before you pick a plan, check that your Marshfield pharmacy is in it. And ask if your price there is preferred or standard.
If the drive is a hassle, some plans offer mail order for drugs you take every day. Our plan finder estimates your yearly cost by plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a hospital in Marshfield, MO?
No. Marshfield has Mercy and CoxHealth clinics, but hospital care is in Springfield or Lebanon.
Will my Medicare Advantage plan cover me at any ER?
Yes. Medicare Advantage plans must cover emergency and urgent care, even out of network. Follow-up care is where the network matters.
I'm healthy and don't take any drugs. Do I need Part D?
You don't have to take it. But if you go 63 days or more without creditable drug coverage, you may owe a penalty later. It usually lasts as long as you have drug coverage.
What's the 2027 out-of-pocket cap on drugs?
For 2027, it's $2,400 for covered Part D drugs. After that, you pay nothing more for covered drugs that year.
