Medicare Help in Lee's Summit, MO

By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19

Lee's Summit is big. It passed 100,000 people in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate is about 107,500. About 16% of residents are 65 or older.

It's also a Kansas City suburb. And in Kansas City, the state line is never far away.

Maybe you work in Kansas. Or see a specialist in Kansas. Or have kids across the line. So here's the question I want to answer:

How does the state line affect my Medicare?

Think of it like your cell phone plan

Here's the mental model.

Your cell phone plan is based on your home address. But it works when you drive across town, or across the state line.

The question is whether it works the same everywhere. Full bars? Or roaming?

Medicare is a lot like that.

  • Original Medicare works like a nationwide plan. Any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare. Kansas or Missouri, doesn't matter.
  • A Medicare Advantage plan is based on where you live. Its network might include Kansas doctors and hospitals. Or it might not. That's the "roaming" question.

Rule #1: Your home county picks your plan list

CMS says a local Medicare Advantage plan's service area is a county or group of counties. To join, you generally have to live there permanently.

So if you live in Lee's Summit, you shop Missouri plans. It doesn't matter if you work in Overland Park or see a doctor in Kansas City, Kansas. Your home address decides your choices.

And here's the Lee's Summit twist. The city sits mostly in Jackson County, with part of it in Cass County. Per the CMS CY2027 Landscape file (not counting special needs plans):

  • Jackson County: 36 Medicare Advantage plans from 5 parent organizations. 29 have a $0 monthly plan premium (you still pay Part B). 19 PPOs, 15 HMOs.
  • Cass County: 29 Medicare Advantage plans from 5 parent organizations. 24 have a $0 monthly plan premium. 17 PPOs, 12 HMOs.

Check the right one: Jackson County plans or Cass County plans.

Rule #2: Check the network on both sides of the line

If you use any Kansas providers, this is the big one.

Say your heart doctor is at The University of Kansas Hospital at 4000 Cambridge St in Kansas City, Kansas. You'd want to know if a Missouri plan includes that hospital in its network. Some might. Some might not.

Here's how I'd sort it out:

  1. List every doctor and hospital, with the state they're in.
  2. Check each one against the plan's network. Not just the ones in Missouri.
  3. If you split care between states, a PPO might give you more room. PPOs generally let you go out of network, but you usually pay more.
  4. Or consider Original Medicare with a Supplement. Then the state line stops mattering for doctors.

One thing works the same either way. Emergency and urgent care are covered anywhere in the U.S., in or out of network.

Where Lee's Summit folks get care

You've got two hospitals right in town:

  • Saint Luke's East Hospital, 100 NE Saint Luke's Blvd. Open 24 hours.
  • Lee's Summit Medical Center, 2100 SE Blue Pkwy. It has 24/7 emergency care and is a certified Primary Stroke Center.

Plus the big Kansas City hospitals are a short drive away, on both sides of the line.

Lee's Summit is also home to John Knox Village, 1001 NW Chipman Rd. It's a Life Plan Community that's been here since 1970, on a campus of more than 200 acres. If you or a parent live in a senior community, check that your plan works with any on-site or nearby providers you use.
