Medicare Help in Jackson, MO
By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19
Jackson is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. Per the city, it was incorporated in 1814. It's about 15,500 people per the 2020 Census, and roughly 1 in 6 residents is 65 or older.
Here's something most Jackson folks don't realize. Your Medicare Advantage menu is a lot shorter than in Springfield or St. Louis.
That's not good or bad. But it changes how I'd shop.
Think of it like a small-town diner menu
Here's the mental model.
A big chain restaurant has a 12-page menu. You can get lost in it.
A small-town diner has one page. Fewer choices. But every choice matters more. If you order wrong, there's not much else to try.
That's Cape Girardeau County.
Per the CMS CY2027 Landscape file, the county has 20 Medicare Advantage plans (not counting special needs plans) from just 3 parent organizations. For comparison, Greene County, around Springfield, has 38 plans from 8.
Here's the 2027 mix for Cape Girardeau County:
- 11 PPOs and 9 HMOs
- 18 have a $0 monthly plan premium. You still pay your Part B premium.
- 15 include drug coverage.
See it all on our Cape Girardeau County plans page.
How I'd shop a short menu
With only a few companies in the county, I'd keep it simple:
- Start with your hospital. Saint Francis or Mercy Southeast? Check that the plan includes the one you use.
- Then your doctors. Every one of them, including specialists.
- Then your drugs. Not every plan includes drug coverage. Only 15 of the 20 do.
- Then compare costs over a full year. Not just the premium.
And don't forget Original Medicare with a Supplement and a drug plan. A shorter Advantage menu doesn't change the Supplement side. You can still see any provider in the U.S. that takes Medicare.
The "send it back" window: January 1 to March 31
Order wrong at the diner? Sometimes you can send it back.
Medicare has something like that. It's called the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. It runs January 1 to March 31 every year.
Here's how it works, per CMS and Medicare.gov:
- Who can use it: People already in a Medicare Advantage plan. Also people in their first 3 months of Medicare who joined an Advantage plan.
- What you can do: Switch to a different Advantage plan, or drop back to Original Medicare and join a separate drug plan.
- How many times: Just one change.
- When it starts: The first of the month after the plan gets your request.
What you can't do in that window: Switch from Original Medicare into an Advantage plan. Or switch from one standalone drug plan to another if you're on Original Medicare. Those changes belong in fall Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7.
So if January comes and your new plan isn't working out, don't panic. Call us before March 31.
