Medicare Help in Branson, MO

By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19

Branson draws retirees. The numbers back it up. Per the Census Bureau, about 1 in 4 Branson residents is 65 or older. That's 24.9%, well above most towns around here.

And plenty of folks retire here from somewhere else. Another part of Missouri. Another state entirely.

So the question I hear most in Branson isn't "what is Medicare?" It's this:

"I just moved here. Does my Medicare still work?"

Short answer: your Medicare does. Your plan might not.

Think of it like forwarding your mail

Here's the mental model.

When you move, you file a change of address with the post office. Some mail follows you. Some doesn't.

Medicare works the same way.

What follows you:

  • Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). It works with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare.
  • A Medicare Supplement. Federal rules usually let you keep it when you move to another county or state. The exception is a Medicare SELECT policy or one with location-based extras.

What might not:

  • A Medicare Advantage plan. These are built around a service area, usually by county. You generally have to live there permanently to stay in the plan.
  • A Part D drug plan. Drug plans have service areas too.

What to do if you moved to Branson with a Medicare Advantage plan

If your new address isn't in your plan's service area, you get a Special Enrollment Period. Here's how Medicare.gov describes it:

  • If you tell your plan before you move, your window starts the month before you move. It runs 2 full months after the move.
  • If you tell your plan after you move, it starts the month you tell them, plus 2 more full months.
  • If you don't pick a new plan in time, you'll be put in Original Medicare when the old plan drops you.

So call your old plan. Tell them you moved. Then let's look at what's available here.

One more note. A part-time stay doesn't count as moving. CMS says "permanent residence" doesn't include a temporary move into an area. If you split the year between Branson and somewhere else, check how a plan covers you in both places before you join.

What to do if you moved with a Medicare Supplement

Good news. You can usually keep it.

But be careful about swapping it for a new one. Medicare.gov says that outside your one-time 6-month Medigap window, you usually don't get a guaranteed right to switch. A company can ask health questions. And if you drop a supplement, you may not get it back.

My advice? Don't cancel anything until a new policy is approved and in place.

Where Branson folks get care

Cox Medical Center Branson, 525 Branson Landing Blvd. CoxHealth calls it a full-service hospital for residents of, and visitors to, Stone and Taney counties.

CoxHealth Center Branson West, 18452 MO-13. Primary care for folks out toward Table Rock Lake.

For bigger specialty needs, many folks drive to Springfield. That's about 50 minutes up Highway 65.

If you're new in town, here's a tip. Find your new primary doctor first. Then pick a plan that includes them. Not the other way around.
