Medicare Help in Bolivar, MO

By Matt Temmen, Springfield, MO · Updated 2026-10-19

Bolivar is the county seat of Polk County. It's home to Southwest Baptist University and Citizens Memorial Hospital. And per the Census Bureau, about 1 in 5 people in town is 65 or older. That's 20.4%.

So Medicare comes up a lot in Bolivar.

The biggest question I hear from Polk County folks is simple: Should I get a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement?

Let's break that down, Bolivar style.

Think of it like paying for a truck

Here's the mental model.

You can pay for a truck two ways.

Option 1: Pay as you go. Lower payment up front. But you pay something every time it's in the shop. And there's a cap on how much you'd ever pay in a year.

Option 2: Pay up front. A steady monthly payment. But when it goes in the shop, most of the bill is already handled.

That's basically the choice.

  • Medicare Advantage is closer to pay as you go. Many plans have low or $0 premiums. You pay copays when you use care. And every plan has a yearly cap on out-of-pocket costs for Part A and Part B services.
  • A Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) is closer to pay up front. You pay a monthly premium. In return, it helps cover what Original Medicare leaves behind.

Neither is "right" for everybody. It depends on your health, your doctors, and your wallet.

Medicare Advantage: what to know in Bolivar

Medicare Advantage plans replace how Original Medicare pays. You get your Part A and Part B coverage through the plan. Most plans also include drug coverage.

Here's the catch for a rural town. You may need to use doctors and hospitals in the plan's network for non-emergency care. And you may need referrals to see specialists.

So the first thing I'd check in Bolivar is simple. Is Citizens Memorial in the plan's network? And what about your specialist in Springfield?

Medicare Supplement: what to know in Bolivar

With a Supplement, you keep Original Medicare. That means you can use any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare. No networks. Generally no referrals.

Two important things:

  1. Supplements don't include drug coverage. Most folks pair one with a separate Part D plan.
  2. Timing matters a lot. You get a one-time 6-month Medigap open enrollment period. It starts the first month you have Part B and you're 65 or older. During that window, a company can't turn you down or charge more because of health problems. After it, they generally can.

That second point is the one I'd circle. If a Supplement is even a maybe for you, look at it during that window.

Where Bolivar folks get care

Bolivar is lucky. You have a full hospital right in town.

Citizens Memorial Hospital, 1500 N Oakland Ave, Bolivar. CMH lists it as an 86-bed acute care hospital. It has emergency services and a Level III Trauma Center. CMH also says it runs 34 primary and specialty clinics and serves a rural eight-county area.

For care CMH doesn't offer, most folks drive to Springfield. That's about 50 minutes to our office.

Here's my Bolivar tip. A lot of your care may run through the CMH system. If you look at an Advantage plan, check the hospital, your CMH clinic, and any CMH specialists. All of them.

3 things I'd never do in Bolivar

  1. Never pick an Advantage plan without checking CMH. Your hometown hospital should be on the list.
  2. Never let your 6-month Medigap window slip by without a look. It doesn't come back.
  3. Never drop a Supplement before a new plan is in place. Medicare.gov says you may not be able to get it back.

Frequently asked questions

Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better in Bolivar?

It depends on your doctors, your health, and how you like to pay. Advantage plans often have lower premiums and networks. Supplements cost more monthly but let you see any provider who takes Medicare.

Does Citizens Memorial Hospital take Medicare?

Check with CMH and with any plan you're considering. With Original Medicare, you can use any provider that accepts Medicare. With an Advantage plan, the network decides.

Do Medicare Supplements cover prescriptions?

No. Plans sold today don't include drug coverage. Most people add a separate Part D plan.

Can I switch from Advantage to a Supplement later?

Sometimes. But outside your Medigap open enrollment period, a company can usually ask health questions and may say no. That's why timing matters.
